The genus Trichoderma was first described in 1794 and showed a relationship with the sexual state Hypocrea. While classification within the genus Trichoderma or Hypocrea uses limited morphological characters, an online identification tool was developed to identify all species in the genus Trichoderma accurately.
A group of Trichoderma species has interesting share features, including adaptation to different environmental conditions, metabolism of various biomolecules or compounds, and fast growth rates.
These metabolic characteristics place these Trichoderma species as major decomposers of the ecosphere and also increase the attention of researchers to exploit their metabolism for industrial purposes.
Indeed, Trichoderma species have been applied in different biotechnological applications such as biological control, biofertilizers, sources of industrial enzymes, and protein producers.
